Silver Ballad
2021
Silver Ballad is LaSúbita's first full-length stage production, created from the need to reconnect with our earliest impulses, to remember why we do what we do, to look back and acknowledge all the bodies that inhabit us—powerful women who inspire us and thanks to whom we have come this far.
The creative process seeks to make explicit that appropriation is an essential part of learning, and that our interpretation of shared knowledge becomes a point of reference. Everything belongs to everyone. We have arrived here influenced and quietly guided by other women—dancers and dance workers—who have been our references, guides, teachers, companions and emotional support... warriors whose presence lives on invisibly within our bodies.
What if the first person to set foot on the moon had been a woman? You are all invited to this moon. We propose a reunion of all past, present and future bodies: an *akelarre*, an endless celebration. Silver Ballad is a poetic journey through the bodies that inhabit us, a tribute to the women who inspire us and to the dancers who leave their mark on us. It is the search for—and discovery of—a space of freedom and safety. It is the conquest of an oasis of lunar dust.

"The piece allows the audience to fully appreciate these two performers, who are equally capable of turning the finale into a joyful celebration with the audience as they are of unfolding a rich choreographic language through their duets. Their solos are enriched by the mutual care and affection they demonstrate for dance and for one another, as dedicated professionals determined to move forward despite the evident obstacles posed by structural sexism."

"This moon is contagious, filled with sisterhood and driven by the desire to communicate that the passing years—of skin, flesh and wrinkles alike—are something to celebrate. Years of struggle and dance become a home built collectively. Women take centre stage, yet no one is excluded from this pop choreography, echoing the spirit of an eighties dance floor while carrying the festive and emancipatory force of believing that another world is possible. LaSúbita expresses this through dance and through the voice-over of Nausicaa Bonnín reading a letter by the dreamer Duncan. They embody the dancers of the future imagined by the charismatic mother of modern dance back in 1903, long before her life became the stuff of legend."
